"Show and Tell"
Maundy Thursday Meditation
March 24, 2016
John 13:1-17, 31b-35
The Rev. Todd R. Goddard, Pastor
East Rochester & West Walworth: Zion United Methodist Churches
The theory and practice
of adult education is called Andragogy
(andro – meaning “man”; and, ago, meaning “leading”)
Time was short.
Jesus needed to cram one final lesson
into his remaining time with his disciples.
The topic was so important,
He could not rely upon mere lecture,
As if he was still preaching on the Mount.
His lazy days of rural ministry were over and done with.
He was in the final moments of his life,
Being lived out in the urban hustle and bustle
of Passover celebrating Jerusalem.
The topic was so central to his mission,
He couldn’t depend upon his disciples memory or intelligence.
The subject of was so key to understanding
his forthcoming passion and death
that Jesus had to employ a new andragogy;
a new method and practice of teaching his adult disciples.
Jesus plays a new card:
It is called “Show and Tell”
Not the kind of show and tell children play in elementary school.
I’m talking about the show and tell
that burns essential truth into receptive minds,
such that this generation,
and future generations,
might always remember and practice
the lesson Jesus is teaching.
Disciples of Jesus should never forget
The essential message of Jesus washing feet.
Show the lesson,
Then tell about it.
Practice the experience.
Involve everyone in the experience.
Everyone, get in line.
Make everyone roll of their sleeves …
… or, in this case …
roll up their pant legs,
And experience what it is like
to have the Master wash his disciples’ feet.
Get your feet wet.
Feel your feet massaged.
Experience your feet being towel dried.
Look at your master,
Who is kneeling before you;
Look him in the eye.
See the love that is reflected in his gaze.
Feel the loving touch of his hands cradling your feet,
Gently washing away with warm water
everything you have ever walked through in life.
unlike you have ever been loved before.
This is our Lord’s new andragogy:
Show the world, in an experiential sort of way,
How much God loves you.
Then, and only then,
drive home the lesson using words.
“I give you a new commandment,
That you love one another.
Just as I have loved you,
You also should love one another.
Everyone will know that you are my disciples,
If you have love for one another.”
( - John 13:34-35)
Show and tell the world the love of God;
The love of Jesus Christ.
Like our Master,
Let us humble ourselves
And wash the feet of others.
Let us serve without expectation of being served in return.
Let the whole world know that you and I are disciples of Jesus,
Simply by our touch,
And our words.
Love in words and in deeds.
Love in everything you say and do.
Show and tell the world of God’s enormous love.
“For God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
may not perish
but may have eternal life.”
( - John 3:16)
